William E. Baker negative collection, [191-?]-[193-?].

This collection of glass plate negatives were made by William E. Baker's studio in Montgomery. The majority of the negatives show individuals and families from the Montgomery area. Approximately half of the negatives are of African-American families. Some of the images are of soldiers in uniform, who were training nearby at Camp Sheridan. Most of the images were made in Baker's studio but many are of outside scenes. All 1,965 images were made between the early 1900s and the 1930s and the identities of the persons in the images are not known.

William Edgewood Baker was a Montgomery, Ala., photographer for over four decades. He was born in 1878 in Alabama and established a photography studio in Montgomery in the early 1900s. His studio was located in the top floor of a building at 116 1/2 Dexter Avenue. In the early 1940s he became the photographer for the Alabama Dept. of Agriculture and Industry.
